Goals:
In recent years, a great deal of effort across
mathematics and natural sciences has been devoted to understanding the foundations of response
theory in deterministic and stochastic dynamical systems and its actual range of applicability in a variety
of complex systems of interest for applications. One of the most promising areas of
application is related to geophysical systems. Specifically, response theory seems well suited for
predicting climate change, studying the conditions leading to tipping points, investigating multiscale
systems, and, possibly studying how extremes change as a result of climate change. While the
foundation of response theory for time-independent perturbations has been thoroughly examined using
the formalism of transfer operators, there is no rigorous basis for the applicability of response theory
when time dependent perturbations are applied. This is an important open question for a myriad
of applications.
This three-day workshop will bring together mathematicians and natural scientists
to explore theoretical and applied aspects of response theory.
